Insulin resistance and weight: a clinician overview

What insulin resistance means, how it relates to weight and energy, and why normal sugar tests can still miss the story.

Insulin resistance means the body's cells respond less efficiently to insulin. The pancreas may produce more insulin to keep blood sugar in range—so glucose looks "normal" while metabolic strain builds. Over time this links to weight gain, fatigue, and higher diabetes risk.

Signs patients mention

  • Weight that will not budge despite real effort
  • Afternoon crashes or intense hunger after meals
  • Central weight gain
  • Family history of type 2 diabetes
  • Skin changes (e.g. acanthosis nigricans) in some cases

What evaluation may include

Physicians may review fasting glucose, HbA1c, lipids, and sometimes fasting insulin or other markers—depending on context. Treatment combines lifestyle, follow-up, and medication only when clinically appropriate under Indian practice standards.
