ADHD in women: symptoms that get missed

Why ADHD is often diagnosed later in women—masking, hormones, and the "high-functioning until you can't" pattern.

In many clinics, the "classic" ADHD picture still skews toward childhood hyperactivity in boys. Women and girls more often present with inattention, internal restlessness, and exhausting compensation—colour-coded calendars, lists, reminders, and sheer willpower—until a life transition (new job, motherhood, perimenopause) collapses the system.

How it can look in adult women

  • Feeling behind despite working constantly
  • Difficulty with household admin, bills, or follow-through on health tasks
  • Sensitivity to rejection or criticism (often dismissed as "too emotional")
  • Symptoms that worsen around periods or perimenopause
  • Anxiety or low mood that started after years of unmanaged overload

Evaluation should include context

A thoughtful workup asks about hormones, sleep, mood, and life load—not only a checklist. At Amcare India, women's health overlap and ADHD pathways are evaluated together when symptoms intersect.
