Executive dysfunction and ADHD: planning, starting, finishing

Why everyday tasks feel impossible—and what physicians mean by executive function in adult ADHD.

Educational only. This article is not personal medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. For individual care, speak with a licensed physician.

Executive function is the brain's project-management layer: prioritise, initiate, switch tasks, hold information in mind, and finish. In adult ADHD, the gap is often not knowledge—you know what you should do—but consistent execution.

What patients describe

  • "I can't start until it's urgent"
  • Paperwork and admin pile up despite real consequences
  • Promising to reply and forgetting for days
  • Cleaning one drawer instead of the report due tomorrow

Treatment is more than willpower

Strategies (body doubling, external deadlines, simplifying environments) help. So can clinically appropriate medication when evaluation supports it. The goal is a plan you can actually run—not another lecture about discipline.
