Low iron, brain fog, and ADHD-like symptoms

Why ferritin and iron studies matter when focus problems feel like ADHD—but might not be.

Iron deficiency is common and under-checked. It can cause fatigue, hair shedding, breathlessness on exertion, and cognitive slowing that mimics ADHD—especially in women with heavy periods or restrictive diets.

Why overlap happens

Both iron deficiency and ADHD can produce poor concentration and mental fatigue. ADHD symptoms are usually lifelong and situational; iron-related fog often tracks with nutritional status, pregnancy, or blood loss and may improve when iron is corrected—under physician guidance.

What to ask in evaluation

  • Whether ferritin and CBC were checked recently—not only haemoglobin
  • Whether symptoms worsened after illness, pregnancy, or dietary change
  • Whether treating iron changed focus (if deficiency was present)
